Does the HCG Diet Plan Work?

May 19th, 2012

Does the HCG diet work? This is not an uncommon question, especially from those looking for rapid weight loss. This day and age people are surrounded by many, many choices, as far as diets and exercise are concerned, and the ones that provide the quickest, easiest results are often the ones most sought after. Many who follow the HCG diet report rapid weight loss and are able to keep it off through ongoing exercise and proper nutrition.

The ?HCG? in HCG diet stands for Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and is produced by pregnant women. Dr. Simeons, the specialist who discovered the relationship between HCG and weight loss, holds the theory that HCG and a low calorie diet can trigger fat loss in the body. This theory is supported by those who lose as much as 20-30 pounds in an average of 30 days while taking HCG supplements. The fat loss is guided by the hypothalamus, a gland in the brain that regulates the autonomic processes of the body.

Autonomic process are the functions in your body that happen on their own, such as heart beat, breathing and digestion. The fat that?s stored in your body is released into the blood stream by the hypothalamus, allowing it to be utilized by the body for energy. This is where the low calorie diet comes into play. The reason that the daily caloric intake on the HCG diet is so low is to ensure that as few calories as possible come from outside sources (food and drink). With such a small source of food being eaten each day, the body is then forced to use the fat (now available in the blood stream thanks to the hypothalamus) to fuel itself.

Another testament to the efficacy of the HCG diet plan is the sheer number of people who have found out for themselves, ?does the HCG diet work?? It?s been around for a lot longer than you may realize, having first been discovered in the early 1950s. Since then, decades of research has been done on the effects of HCG and it?s relationship to weight loss. During that time, thousands of people have successfully lost weight using Dr. Simeons? discovery.

It?s important to note, though, that simply following a very low calorie diet without the assistance of HCG is not recommended. The HCG works by stimulating the hypothalamus to release fat into the blood stream to be used as energy. As such, the body is able to keep moving along, not realizing that it?s energy intake has been drastically reduced. Without the effect of the HCG, a low calorie diet will be unsustainable and dangerous, possibly leading to a host of adverse effects to your health.

Those who have followed the HCG diet notice dramatic weight loss beginning in the first day on the program. Some have reported to have lost as much as 1lb per day -an amazing rate of weight loss! Everyone?s body is different though, and similar results may not be enjoyed by each individual. Plus, like all supplements and medications, there will always be an outlier who may not respond to HCG. Reputable suppliers will often offer refunds to those who find that the program doesn?t work for them, but these reports are few and far between. The vast majority of those who follow the HCG diet closely enjoy rapid weight loss and keep it off.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Kerry Wood arrived in the majors 14 years ago, a fresh-faced kid with No. 34 on his back, slinging fastballs at 100 mph, delivering breaking pitches that were often unhittable and striking out 20 batters in just his fifth start.

On Friday, he left the game after one final, emotional appearance with the Chicago Cubs.

Fittingly, “Kid K” struck out the last batter he’ll ever face and retired at the age of 34, ending a career that was eye-popping at times but hampered by injuries.

“I had a blast. I wouldn’t trade it in, I learned from the injuries, I learned about my body and what it takes to compete and go out and play every day,” Wood said Friday after his final game, a 3-2 loss to the White Sox.

“Mentally and physically we get to this point,” Wood said. “Every player gets to this point where we don’t all get to choose when, we don’t all get to have a say in it. But I was fortunate enough to play this game a long time in a great city in front of the best fans in baseball. … It was time.”

Wood struck out Dayan Viciedo on three pitches, the last one a swing and a miss, in the eighth inning before he was replaced as bench coach Jamie Quirk came to take him out since manager Dale Sveum had been ejected earlier. His teammates joined him on the mound to congratulate him and he left to a rousing ovation. Even White Sox slugger Adam Dunn doffed his batting helmet and clapped for Wood as he stood at first base.

Wood hugged his son as he reached the dugout, then lifted the boy into his arms. Moments later, he came out for a curtain call and waved his cap to the fans.

“I felt like I was getting ready to pitch my first inning. The adrenaline was the same, the nerves were the same. I can’t give enough credit to the fans, just a tremendous feeling,” Wood said.

Wood went on the disabled list earlier this season with shoulder fatigue ? he was on the DL more than a dozen times over his career ? and had struggled all year. His frustrations were evident when, after a bad outing against the Atlanta Braves at Wrigley Field, he tossed his cap and glove into the stands.

“My body wasn’t bouncing back this year. I felt like I was putting guys in the ‘pen in situations they didn’t need to be in. I definitely didn’t want to go out with my last inning being me throwing my glove in the seats,” Wood said. “I wanted to put up a zero or at least get one guy out.”

One of his best friends, starter Ryan Dempster, said he would really miss Wood’s presence in the clubhouse

“It will be tough not seeing him out there pitching,” he said as Wood was shagging fly balls with his son before the game. “He’s been a great friend and a great teammate and a great Chicago Cub.”

Coming into the year, Wood was 86-73 with a 3.64 ERA and 63 saves. He left the Cubs as a free agent in December 2008, signing with the Cleveland Indians for two years and $20.5 million. He was traded to the Yankees in July 2010, becoming Mariano Rivera’s setup man, but he remained loyal to Chicago.

“Most every day he went out there, especially before he had the arm surgery, he had no-hit stuff,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi who was Wood’s teammate from 2000-2002 with the Cubs and then managed him in New York.. “Loved playing with him. He loved to play the game. He really did.’

Wood returned to the Cubs in 2011, when he went 3-5 with a 3.35 ERA in 55 relief appearances before shutting it down because of a tear in his left knee that required arthroscopic surgery. In January, Wood agreed to play for the Cubs again for $3 million ? double his 2011 pay ? with a $3 million club option for 2013.

It was no secret that Wood wanted to remain a Cub. He lives in Chicago year-round, and the team’s new regime had made it clear the feelings were mutual. New president of baseball operations Theo Epstein called it a “no-brainer” move to bring back the popular reliever.

Wood, after all, came of age as an athlete in Chicago and his games have provided some welcome bright spots for a franchise that infamously hasn’t won a World Series in more than a century.

The Cubs’ No. 1 selection in the 1995 amateur draft was a 20-year-old rookie when he delivered one of the greatest pitching performances of all time. On May 6, 1998, he allowed only one hit, a third-inning single by Ricky Gutierrez, in a 2-0 victory over the Houston Astros. It was his fifth major league start.

As the game progressed and with rain falling, Wood’s stuff was never better. Throwing fastballs at 100 mph and with his slider dipping around the Houston bats, Wood didn’t walk a batter, hit one with a pitch and gave up that lone infield single on a ball Cubs third baseman Kevin Orie couldn’t come up with.

When Wood fanned Bill Spiers in the ninth for his 19th strikeout, Wood tied the National League record. He struck out Derek Bell to end the game and tie Roger Clemens’ major league mark (the two still remain the only MLB pitchers to do it in nine innings).

“I didn’t know how many strikeouts I had. I knew I had already given up a hit in the third inning,” Wood later recalled. “I was just trying to get my first complete game.”

He added: “I’ll never forget it. It’s a great moment in my life and my career.”

Wood said his slider was his main weapon that day as he struck out the side in the first, fifth, seventh and eighth innings, and fanned two each in the second, fourth and ninth, and one each in the third and the sixth. Wood threw 122 pitches, 84 for strikes, and got a congratulatory phone call from Clemens afterward.

“The age, as hard as he threw, the command and the poise that he had on the mound, nothing bothered him that day,” Gutierrez recalled. “After the game, we just took our hats off to him. He did a great job. There’s nothing you can take away from him.”

Wood struck out 13 in seven innings in his next outing, setting a major league record for strikeouts in back-to-back games. Clemens and Nolan Ryan, whose No. 34 Wood wore on his back, are fellow Texans and the pitchers who most inspired the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Wood, who is from Irving, Texas.

Wood finished the 1998 season ranked third in the NL in strikeouts and won the league’s Rookie of the Year award. He missed the final month with a sore right elbow, then had reconstructive elbow surgery the next April, starting a run of arm and shoulder problems that undercut his career. He missed the entire 1999 season.

He had three double-figure victory seasons from 2001-03, and in 2003 he helped the Cubs reach Game 7 of the NLCS, where he was the losing pitcher despite hitting a home run against the Florida Marlins.

Shoulder problems nearly ended his career, but he made a stirring comeback and a successful transition to the bullpen, emerging as the Cubs’ closer in 2008 and converting 34 of 40 save opportunities.

“The shoulder was a lot tougher in the end there, in ’05 and ’06, was the toughest thing to come back from,” Wood recalled. “But you come back from it because you love the game of baseball and you love competing. You love being in that clubhouse with 24 other guys.”

Steve Stone, the Cy Young winner who has been a broadcaster for both the Cubs and White Sox, said Wood threw across his body and that put undue stress on his arm.

“He came up with as good of stuff as anyone who ever came into this league. You talk about (Stephen) Strasburg and the impact (Doc) Gooden had, the reality is Kerry’s stuff was better than both of those guys,” Stone said.

“Kerry had the 100 mph fastball. He had an unhittable curveball. He had an unhittable slider. And that day in his fifth major league start he got them all over the plate. He didn’t walk anybody. It was absolutely phenomenal,” Stone said. “I think the hopes and prayers of the Cubs fans, seeing that, said, ‘this is a guy that’s going to rival Ferguson Jenkins.’… But it was a fatal flaw in his delivery that was his undoing.”

Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija said Wood’s influence was heavy on him as he grew up in Indiana.

“I remember being a kid and my dad reading an article about Kerry working out in the pool and that’s why he threw 98. So my dad, the next day, has me in the pool kicking floaties around,” Samardzija said. “For a kid growing up in the Midwest, that’s what Kerry was to us kids.

:When we were coming up, that’s the dude you wanted to be. That’s how you wanted to throw.”

Physical therapy helps restore strength and mobility

May 18th, 2012

Lead a pain-free life with physical therapy

Whether it is a temporary or a permanent disability issue, physical therapy or physiotherapy is a crucial element of patient care. It offers a complete range of treatment options for all varieties of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.? In this article, we will examine how physical therapy helps restore strength and mobility.

Life after a stroke can be extremely trying. Fortunately, physical therapy can provide some relief. It is very effective in improving the movement potential of the patient by strengthening the muscles and activating the flexibility of the joints. Besides providing effective treatment for a stroke, other conditions that can be treated with physical therapy rehabilitation programs include:

? Arthritis
? Brain Injury
? Sport injuries
? Musculoskeletal diseases
? Hip and ankle pain
? Neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson?s disease
? Paediatric disorders and more

What does a physical therapy session include?

In a physical therapy session, the trained practitioner ? who is called a physical therapist or physiotherapist (PT) ? evaluates the condition of the patient and establishes a treatment plan.

This normally includes the details about various therapies, exercises, and other interventions that need to be implemented to improve patient fitness and wellbeing.

Physical therapy treatments are mainly categorized into passive and active treatments. Passive therapies refer to a wide range of treatments that do not require the participation of the patient, such as manual therapy, myofascial release, Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, traction procedure, and ice/heat therapies. The active segment includes various physical therapy exercises that the patient performs to tone the muscles, build endurance and strength, and regain physical balance and coordination.

Therapeutic exercises are further classified into

? Strengthening exercises that are meant to develop muscle strength
? Balance exercises that are simple exercises performed to improve balance
? Stretching exercises done to enhance the patient?s range of motion and prevent further injuries.
? Endurance exercises to help a patient regain stamina following prolonged hospitalization

To benefit from the full scope of physical therapy services, you should adhere to the instructions of the therapist. Specialists at leading multi-specialty health centers can design a customized physical therapy program to help restore your strength and mobility.

5 Reasons 'Diablo III' Represents Gaming's Annoying Future …

May 18th, 2012

If given a choice between going back and living in the year 1982 and sitting in a chair made of living dicks, most of us would choose the dicks. After all, back then you had almost zero control over your entertainment — you watched shows and movies when they wanted you to. (This was even before everybody had VCRs — if you missed it live, you missed it forever.) All technological progress since then has been devoted to letting us watch shows or movies when we want. Video games, however, are going the opposite direction.

For a prime example, let’s take the just-released Diablo III.

I haven’t been excited about a video game in a long, long time. It’s not because I’ve hit some magical stage of adulthood that makes me hate fun things, or that I’m so busy that I can’t find time for simple entertainment. Give me a good enough game, and I’ll make time for it. Give me something spectacular, and I’ll call in sick for it. Give me something I’ve waited 12 years for, and I’ll burn down my grandma’s house for a copy.

The smoldering charcoal on my grandma’s scorched lawn means that Diablo III came out two days ago. Unfortunately for her, I didn’t realize until later that arson in no way affects the game’s availability. Especially since you can just download it directly from their website instead of camping out in front of the store on opening day. So I did:

I just bought something in my underwear and didn’t have to go to court afterward!

I filled out the information and downloaded their installer. Then I moved it to the upper right hand corner of my screen so it would look like my desktop wallpaper was licking it out of pure joy.

“Mmmmm, that’s some good installation, John. Thank you for letting me lick it with my giant cow tongue,” I voiced as I watched the progression bar slowly tick to the right.

“I know, Mrs. Cow. I love you. You’re always so nice to me.”

“You know what, John? You’re a good guy. It doesn’t matter what the rest of the world thinks of you. Just know that I love you, and that’s all that matters.”

I did this for about an hour, pausing every couple of minutes to weep softly into my hands, until the game was fully downloaded and installed. So far, so good …

#5. “Ready to Play Your Single-Player Game Alone? Please Log In.”

When that bar turned green and the “Play” button lit up, my dong rose like 20 tiny Amish guys were pulling on it with ropes. I clicked “play” and then “I agree” on not one, but three “User Agreement” screens. That’s when the first smoke alarm went off in my head.

It boils down to “We can do whatever we want, and you can’t sue us.”

Wait, I have to sign a contract to play the game that I just paid for? Do I need to get a lawyer? Can I do something in the game that could get me into legal trouble? I mean, I don’t plan on playing public games or anything — just me in my computer room, killing evil and screaming curse words until I lose my voice.

But I convinced myself it was nothing to get worked up about. It’s just there to save their asses in case some random jackoff finds a way to make money off of them via lawsuit. Fine. I got through them all and was immediately taken to a screen that pulled the alarms from the back of my mind directly to the front, and cranked up the volume to “nuclear attack” levels.

No. No, no, no, no, no … No.

For the six of you who just discovered the Internet today, that’s a login screen. It’s commonly associated with multiplayer online games like World of Warcraft and … whatever other multiplayer games exist. Except there’s a problem: Diablo III isn’t a traditional MMO. You don’t sign in to the game and immediately find yourself surrounded by a hundred other players shouting racial and homophobic slurs. You are in your own world. By yourself. Single player.

It is a single-player game with multiplayer options, just like all the other Diablo games. If you choose to play with your friends, you can. If you choose to join public games, you can. Otherwise, you’re on your own — and contrary to what MMO fanatics believe, this is the way millions of gamers prefer it.

But for the second time, I had to take a breath and remind myself that it’s nothing to get worked up about. We’ve been fucking the gaming industry since the very first video game was invented. They put up with piracy for decades, and so far nothing has worked to stop it. This is just what they’ve come to, and if signing in to their servers helps prevent theft, then I’m all for it. The more money they make, the more resources they have to put back into expansions and content. Fine.

#4. “Now Customize Your Single-Player Character as You Please … Wait, Not Like That.”

I logged in and created my first character: a monk named Fuckhole.

Oh, come on! Really? You can’t give me the option to name them whatever I want and then just ban me from entering public games? You can’t give me the freedom to make a mage named Assfuck Cockthrob on the game that I never plan on playing with other people as long as I live?

OK, it’s not the end of the world, but making computers utter profanities against their will is the reason I got into video games in the first place. In the Reagan era I played arcade games purely so I could get the high score and enter my initials on the leaderboard as “ASS.” I replayed an entire RPG because I knew that there was one specific point where the female love interest would have to say the line, “Father, I want you to meet my new boyfriend, CUNTBLASTER.” How have the decades resulted in less freedom to be childish?

But fine, this time I’ll resort to stupid puns.

Get it? Because “monk” sounds like “punk.” And CM Punk is a wrestler who — aw, fuck it.

OK, so I decided that I wasn’t going to bitch about it. They’re clearly trying to prevent piracy while masking it with a “social” setting that’s barely there in the first place. I’ve been giving this game a liberal amount of leeway, and if it’s as good as they say, then it’s a necessary evil that I’m willing to live with. Even though I have so few friends, I never have to worry about accidentally exposing my perverted, juvenile name to the guys who absolutely expect that sort of thing from me … and who do it themselves.

I wish you could play video games, Mrs. Cow. You’d make a wicked barbarian.

I wasn’t disappointed. I signed in and decided that my character had a personality flaw that made him think that death was hilarious. Which became even funnier to me when a friend came online and immediately appeared in my game, catching me in mid role-play — with myself.

That’s when I found out that there’s an option enabled by default that allows anyone you are friends with through your Battle.net account to join your game at any point without asking. And not just through this specific game. The friend who showed up was someone I added back when I played World of Warcraft. And since both games are made by Blizzard, and both utilize the Battle.net account system, he’s automatically on my friends list on my single-player game. So we killed some stuff for a while, and I kind of felt bad about getting mad over that whole “Fuckhole” incident. Hell, I’m friends with my oldest son through that system. Not that he’d be shocked about my stupid anal sex name, but I’m sure it would cause an unwanted conversation with my ex-wife. You get the point.

The more I played, the more I realized that my cynicism was for nothing. I was just being a whiny child, complaining about change. The game is impossibly fun, and if all I had to do was succumb to a simple social network, then I was –

#3. “Sorry, You Can’t Play Your Single-Player Game Because Our Computer Is Broken.”

Wait, what? Why is my screen going black? Is it some surprise cut scene? Maybe some Easter egg that triggers when you laugh at gravestones? I tensed in anticipation.

Nope, I got booted back to the start menu. Well, shit. No biggie — that happens from time to time when you’re playing something that’s hosted on a remote server. I’ll just sign back in and pick up where I left off.

I sighed, clicked the “OK” button and attempted to sign in six more times. This is also common with disconnects, and I tried to cool my slowly heating blood by reminding myself that when you get booted, your character is still active on their servers until their software recognizes that you’re no longer connected and kicks you out on their end. A mousy voice in the back of my head started whispering a soft chant of “Single-player game.” I signed in for the seventh time.

Oh. Well, that’s … really? I mean, I understand why it’s happening. It’s launch day for a game that’s being hosted on a set of servers designed to handle a certain load of players. After the initial rush of people settles down, there won’t be nearly as many people playing the game at the same time. So it’s not smart to buy enough servers to handle the entire player base all at once because you’d only need those for the first week. You set up enough to handle your average load so that when things do settle into a rhythm, you don’t have a bunch of useless, idle machines sitting around, collecting dust and wasting money.

“For your single-player game that has no offline option.” No, stupid voice! Stop that! Let’s just exit the game and go in from scratch. Sometimes, it’s just a simple bug that’s fixed by going in fresh.

MOTHERFUCKER! This is bullshit! I just paid 64 goddamn dollars for a game that- No. You can’t let the game turn you into that screaming sack of shit type of personality that permeates the Internet. You hate that person, and you won’t become it.

From behind me, my fiance sighed and said, “Motherfucker! This is bullshit!”

Muslim consumers: How do global brands become ‘infidels’?

Among Islamists, certain global brands can be considered threats to Muslim identity, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

“‘Infidel! Infidel!’ cries the six-year-old boy upon hearing his mother mention Nestl during our interview,” writes author Elif Izberk-Bilgin (University of Michigan-Dearborn). “Why would a six-year-old call Nestl infidel? How do global brands like Coca-Cola and Disney get tangled in a complex web of sociopolitical dynamics and become targets of religiously charged consumer activism?”

In describing a phenomenon she calls “consumer jihad,” Izberk-Bilgin explores consumer boycotts of brands associated with Western influences and policies. The author conducted an ethnographic study of low-income Muslim consumers in Turkey. Her informants were shantytown dwellers who had migrated to Istanbul for employment. Many of her interviewees had traditional upbringings and faced economic hardships and culture shock when they arrived in Istanbul’s urban setting. “These informants embraced Islam not just as a matter of faith and a normative system, but also as a political and social model,” the author writes. “As a result, this Islamist view reflected on their consumption choices.”

Although study participants named Western multinational corporations as examples of infidel brands, some informants also named reputable Turkish brands as infidels. “This suggests that what fosters the infidel critique is not simply an anti-Western sentiment. Rather, it is the complex interplay of many socio-historical factors such as the informants’ discontent with uneven economic globalization, the growing influence of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in domestic policies, the elite-led modernization project in Turkey, and the stigmatized ‘backward’ social position of Islamists that fuel the infidel critique,” Izberk-Bilgin writes.

Instead of merely rejecting Western values or modern market systems, Islamists engage in consumer activism as a way to “moralize the market” and embrace products (like gender-segregated resorts and alcohol-free perfumes) that reflect their values, Izberk-Bilgin concludes.

US stocks waver; euro dives on Greece turmoil

Stronger news about the U.S. economy stilled the ripples from Europe’s latest political impasse Tuesday, pushing U.S. stocks between modest gains and losses.

The euro and European stocks plunged as trading in New York began after efforts to form a government in Greece collapsed. Newly-elected political leaders there disagree about whether to accept more international bailouts and continue with painful spending cuts.

In the U.S., stocks staged a mid-morning rally after word that confidence among U.S. builders rose to a five-year high in May. The index has risen for seven of the past eight months. Homebuilders rallied. Hovnanian Enterprises surged 10 percent, Lennar Corp. 4 percent and KB Home 3 percent.

Earlier, a survey by the New York Federal Reserve found that manufacturing activity in the New York region rebounded this month far more strongly than economists had expected.

The market’s early rise deflated briefly, then stocks climbed at midday to new daily highs. By the afternoon, the indexes again were flat for the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 12 points to 12,683 as of 3 p.m. EDT. Losses by most of its components were offset by gains for JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, shaking off recent losses related to the surprise $2 billion trading loss that JPMorgan announced last week.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell two to 1,336. The Nasdaq composite index rose seven to 2,909.

Stocks are having their worst month in the past eight. For the month, the Dow is down 518 points ? about 4 percent ? after hitting a four-year high on May 1. The average is on track to post its first monthly loss since September, when it fell 6 percent.

If the Dow closes higher, it will be only its second up day since the peak reached on May 1.

The euro fell as low as $1.2730, a four-month low against the dollar, after Greek socialist leader Evangelos Venizelos declared that attempts to form a governing coalition there had failed and new elections will be held next month. If voters elect parties opposed to the terms of the country’s financial rescue, Greece could be expelled from the euro, shocking global markets.

Stock indexes in France, Britain and Germany gave up earlier gains after Venizelos’ remarks and closed sharply lower.

Aside from fears about Europe, stocks are suffering because a string of weaker economic data in recent weeks has dampened hopes for corporate performance in the current quarter ending June 30, said John Butters, senior earnings analyst at FactSet, a financial data provider.

For the first month of the quarter, as earnings came in strong and stocks rose, analysts’ expectations for second-quarter earnings growth held steady at 6 percent, Butters said. In the two weeks since then, as the U.S. economy appeared to soften and Europe’s problems reemerged, analysts cut their estimates for S&P 500 earnings growth to 5 percent, he said.

Analysts expect earnings to decline this quarter for half of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500, Butters said. He said many expect a strong rebound in the fourth quarter as demand returns in emerging markets such as China and India.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Home Depot slumped 2 percent, the most of the 30 companies in the Dow, after the world’s biggest home-improvement company forecast revenue that was below what Wall Street analysts were expecting.

? TJX Cos., which owns the T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods store chains, shot up 7 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index. The discount retailer reported a 58 percent surge in first-quarter income and raised its full-year profit forecast.

? Avon Products Inc. fell 11 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index, after Coty Inc. canceled its unsolicited, $10.7 billion bid for the cosmetics retailer.

? Groupon leapt 6 percent after the online daily discount site reported first-quarter revenue that exceeded analysts’ expectations.
